Mayor Javier E. Sanchez

Javier moved to the beautiful Española Valley over 20 years ago. After graduating college and getting his first job, he lived on the West Side and commuted daily to Santa Fe. Working as an analyst for a mutual fund company, Javier learned to analyze the financial statements of publicly held companies. In addition to acquiring investment management and accounting skills, Javier honed his ability to scrutinize data and establish a no-nonsense approach to decision making. This experience strengthened his insight regarding what companies look for in local communities. Before devoting millions of dollars to build office buildings, apartment complexes and retail shops, investors seek safe neighborhoods, growth in personal income, vibrant social outlets and high ranks in education.

Afterward, Javier advanced his education and enrolled in the Master of Business Administration program at the University of Notre Dame and graduated Cum Laude. He focused his instruction on finance and investments receiving the Kenneth Meyer award for outstanding achievement in global investment management. At that point, Javier returned to La Cocina Restaurant where the Maestas family welcomed him as one of their own. Not afraid to get his hands dirty, Javier joined the family business of making sopaipillas, enchiladas and all the local favorites. While remaining true to the traditions that make La Cocina and Espanola exceptionally unique, Javier helped to expand the family restaurant into other parts of town. Successfully growing business and economic value in Espanola meant giving back. That means Javier has kept community development a top priority by volunteering and donating time and money to the causes that need it most.

As a businessman and analyst, Javier is uniquely positioned to focus on the beauty that Española has to offer and what it needs. Combining his education with experience as an entrepreneur and investment manager, Javier has the leadership capabilities to raise the standards required to position Española for growth. With pride, fundamental and sound economic business practices and professionalism, we can take Española in a new direction. Together we can raise the standard of living for current and future generations through honesty, integrity, and pride.

Javier also received a Congressional scholarship to attend high school in Stade, Germany as a foreign exchange student. He also spent time studying at the University of Heidelberg, Germany and worked for Accenture (formerly Andersen Consulting) in Munich, Germany as a business consultant. Javier received his undergraduate degree with Honors in Philosophy from Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. He is currently a board member of the Regional Development Corporation and the Northern New Mexico Crisis Center.
