CITY OF ESPAÑOLA
2010 CERTIFIED CANDIDATES

I, Heather E. Velasquez, City Clerk, have received in my office on filing day January 5, 2010, declaration of candidacy for the following individuals, and have determined that those declarations are valid and complete and have certified the individuals as official candidates for the 2010 Municipal Election to be held on March 2, 2010:

Mayoral Candidates:

District 1 Council Candidates:

  • Danielle Duran
  • Pedro Valdez

District 2 Council Candidates:

  • Jason L. Salazar
  • Greg N. Ortega

I received no declarations of candidacy that were not certified.

The City of Española will hold a regular municipal election on Tuesday, March 2, 2010 for the purpose of electing:

  • One Mayor elected at-large to a four year term;
  • One City Councilor from District 1 to a four-year term;
  • One City Councilor from District 2 to a four-year term;
  • One City Councilor from District 3 to a four-year term; and
  • One City Councilor from District 4 to a four-year term.

    The City of Española will also hold a special election, in conjunction with the regular election on Tuesday, March 2, 2010, for the purpose of voting on the issuance of General Obligation Library Bonds in an aggregate principal amount of $6,100,000; the following question shall be submitted to the city’s qualified electors:

“Shall the City of Española issue general obligation bonds up to $6,100,000, to be repaid from property taxes for the purpose of designing, planning, constructing and equipping a new library?”

CLOSE OF REGISTRATION BOOKS

All persons desiring to vote in the March 2, 2010 regular municipal election must be registered in the city of Española.  The Rio Arriba and Santa Fe County Clerks will close the registration books for the election on Tuesday, February 2, 2010.

Please note:  the City of Española spans two counties – Rio Arriba County and Santa Fe County.  City residents wishing to register to vote must be registered in the county in which they reside.  For more information, or if you are unsure of which county you reside in, please call the City Clerk at 747-6019.

ABSENTEE AND EARLY VOTING

An application for an absentee ballot may be obtained from the office of the City Clerk:

 Absentee Voting.  Applications for absentee ballots may be obtained only from the office of the City Clerk.  All applications for an absentee ballot must be completed and accepted by the City Clerk prior to 5:00 p.m., February 26, 2010.  After 5:00 p.m. on February 26, 2010, all unused absentee ballots will be publicly destroyed by the City Clerk.  The City Clerk will accept completed absentee ballots delivered by mail, or in person by the voter casting the absentee ballot or by a member of the voter’s immediate family, or by the caregiver to the voter until 7:00 p.m. on March 2, 2010.

Absentee ballots may be marked in person in the office of the City Clerk during the regular hours and days of business, beginning on Tuesday, January 26, and closing at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, February 26, 2010.

Early Voting.  Early voting on paper ballots counted by M100 electronic vote tabulator will be conducted in the office of the City Clerk during the regular hours and days of business, beginning on Wednesday, February 10, 2010 and closing at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, February 26, 2010.

ELECTION DAY

Election Day is Tuesday, March 2, 2010.  The polls will open at 7:00 a.m. and close at 7:00 p.m.  Listed below are the polling places for the March 2, 2010 municipal election:

Rio Arriba County Precincts 3, 4, 10, 11 and 40 are consolidated for the regular municipal election. 

Rio Arriba County Precincts 7, 8, 9, 12, and 36 are consolidated for the regular municipal election.

Santa Fe County Precincts 1, 58, 59 and 79 are consolidated for the regular municipal election.

The following locations are designated as polling places for the conduct of the regular municipal election:

  1. Voters in Rio Arriba County Precinct 7, 8, 9, 12, and 36 shall vote at
    The Beatrice V. Quintana-Martinez Senior Center
    located at 735 Vietnam Veterans Road. 
  2. Voters in Rio Arriba County Precinct 3, 4, 10, 11 and 40 shall vote at
    SantaCruz de la Canada Gymnasium (Holy Cross Gymnasium)
    located at 1327 Holy Cross St.
  3. Voters in Santa Fe County Precincts 1, 58, 59 and 79 shall vote at
    Santa Cruz de la Canada Gymnasium (Holy Cross Gymnasium)
    located at 1327 Holy Cross St.
