Councilor Vigil is a native of Española’s historic West Side, born to Carmela Salazar and the grandson of the late Ramon & Alberta Salazar; the longtime owners of Block-Salazar Mortuary. He is a parishioner of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church. Vigil is proud to be the city’s youngest city councilor – elected at age 22.
John Ramon is a 2014 graduate of Española Valley High School and obtained a Bachelor of Arts in History, minor in Management from New Mexico Highlands University in 2018. While at NMHU, he was appointed by Governor Susana Martinez to the New Mexico Highlands University Board of Regents to serve as the student regent.
Councilor Vigil has the distinction of being the youngest appointed person to a city board when he was appointed to the Library Board – at age 14. Additionally, John Ramon has served on the Española Fiesta Council for many years coordinating the Plaza grounds and the parade as well as assisting with the tradition of farolitos throughout the City on Christmas Eve. Some of Vigil’s most treasured learning moments come from the advice and wisdom of his mentor, longtime Española Mayor Richard Lucero.
