Michelle R. Martinez was born and raised in the beautiful Española Valley. She is the second of three children born to Leo O. Martinez, Sr. and Celia R. Martinez and currently serves as a Councilor for District 2. She currently serves on the Public Works and Finance Committees for the City of Española.
Councilor Martinez was awarded the first ever Linda Gaume Jaramillo Scholarship through the New Mexico Municipal League to participate in the Municipal Officials Leadership Institute. The Program consists of three components, Education, Governance and Leadership. Councilor Martinez graduated from the program at the 2015 NNML Annual Conference and is now a Certified Municipal Official. She believes this educational opportunity has allowed her to become a more effective leader and advocate for her community. She is also a Lifetime Member of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO), serves as Board Chair for the Greater Española Valley Community Development Corporation (GEVCDC) and is member of the Española Rotary Club.
Councilor Michelle R. Martinez received a Bachelor of Criminal Justice degree with a supplementary major in Government (Law and Society) from New Mexico State University as well as a Master of Arts in both Professional Counseling and School Counseling from New Mexico Highlands University, where she was a member of the Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society. She is a firm believer in higher education and aspires to one day obtain a PhD. Councilor Michelle R. Martinez currently works as a professional school counselor for the Española Public Schools. She is a member of the American School Counselor Association.
Councilor Michelle R. Martinez considers her greatest blessing being a mother to her four beautiful children, Jordyn, Nathaniel, Nevaeh and Michaela. She is also blessed to be intricately involved in the lives of three other children who are an extension of her own, Jayden, Jaylalee and Francisco. Through the gift of her children she has learned the true meaning of her life, her family. They highly motivate her and were a key factor in her desire to run for public office. Councilor Michelle R. Martinez is a firm believer in the notion of being the change that you seek.
