Joseph Maestas is a native New Mexican born in Santa Fe and raised in Santa Cruz. He is a product of the Española public school system. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of New Mexico and a Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering from Arizona State University. Joseph is a registered professional engineer in New Mexico. His professional career included 23 years with the Federal Government as an engineer, planner, and program manager. He is currently an engineering and management consultant.
Joseph was newly elected as Mayor of Española in March 2006. He was elected to a second term on the Española City Council in March 2004. He has been serving the City of Española since March 2000. He serves in several leadership positions in his capacity as a Mayor. On the national level, Joe recently served as a member of the National League of Cities’ (NLC) Board of Directors. He is currently the Past President of the Hispanic Elected Local Officials’ (HELO) Board of Directors. The NLC is the oldest and largest national organization in the United States and serves as a resource to and an advocate for the more than 16,000 cities, villages, and towns it represents. HELO is a constituency group of the National League of Cities.
On the statewide level, Joseph serves as Past President of the New Mexico Municipal League (NMML) Board of Directors. The NMML is a nonprofit, nonpartisan association whose member cities comprise all of the State's 103 incorporated municipalities. Governor Richardson recently appointed him to the New Mexico Economic Partnership’s Board of Directors.
Joseph’s extensive community leadership and service also include his involvement in numerous statewide, regional, and local boards. He enjoys biking, running, swimming, weight training, and skiing. He co-manages and co-owns a family business in Santa Cruz. He is married and a proud father of his eleven-year old son, Joseph Fabian. |
