New Ordinance Establishes Election Districts

The Governing Body of the City of Espaņola adopted Ordinance 2007-06, entitled the City of Espaņola Districting Ordinance, at its regular Council Meeting on October 25, 2007. By this Ordinance, there are created four (4) two (2) - member municipal election districts.

The Ordinance passed unanimously, and will take effect November 2. The Ordinance also requires that “City Councilors shall reside in and be elected from their respective municipal election districts pursuant to NMSA 3-12-1.1, 1978 as amended. ”

The action taken by the City Council is of historical significance, as it clears up a confusing and somewhat controversial ward system that had been in effect for over 40 years.

“This new law is central to our efforts to reform our election process that has been controversial in the past and recently scrutinized in court and by the Attorney General’s Office. A new day has dawned regarding the election process in Espaņola ! ” Mayor Maestas said of the adoption of the Ordinance.
