 LisaTorres-Lopez. Water Secretary |
The City of Española is completely reliant on ground water for its water supply. Over the past 40 years several wells have been abandoned, due to either casing failures or problems with ground water contamination. New wells drilled to replace lost production are deeper and generally located farther from the Rio Grande and inner valley than the older wells were. The ever present threat of ground - water contamination, both natural and introduced, to existing wells coupled with the stress of growing demand and increasingly - stringent federal government regulations, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) require an innovative approach to securing a safe and reliable water supply for future generations.
