Recreation Division

It is the mission of the Española Recreation Division to provide service to the community which promotes health awareness by providing recreation and leisure activities and health programs for people of all ages.

The Recreation Division operates and maintains two facilities, The Richard L. Lucero Center and the Penny Garcia Aquatic Center.

Richard L. Lucero Center

Located at 313 Paseo de Onate, the Lucero Center, as it is more commonly referred to, is the primary recreation facility for the City of Espanola. It houses a swimming pool, gymnasium and weight room and is open year round. A host of activities take place in the Lucero Center.

The gymnasium is used primarily for pick-up basketball as well as the Espanola City Basketball League. Martial Arts are also taught in the gymnasium. Teen dances are held in the gymnasium. Toddler hour is held every Thursday at 11:00 AM.

The weight room has a host of free weights and exercise machines. Drop in and see what we have.

The Richard L. Lucero Center also houses a swimming pool. Times are allotted for open swim, lap swim, lessons and water aerobic classes. See 2008 schedule for specific information. 

During the summer months, the Recreation Division operates the Summer Food Service Program that provides FREE, nutritional breakfast and lunch for children ages one to eighteen. The SFSP is operated at various sites in and around the City and is run in conjunction with the summer recreation program.

Competitive boxing, kick boxing and boxing for fitness are conducted by local boxing sensation Monica Lovato.

Penny Garcia Aquatic Center

The Penny Garcia Aquatic Center is a seasonally operated outdoor swimming pool. It is open from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Times are allotted for open swim, lap swim, lessons and water aerobic classes.
