Water Conservation Alert

As you know by now, our community is experiencing a serious lack of water this season. Our City Council has therefore passed Stage 2 of our Emergency Water Conservation Ordinance, which promotes conservation of water during the summer months, allowing our wells to continue to supply water to our businesses and homes. The following information outlines the rules of this ordinance for you. At this time, the Council has not implemented the water surcharges contained in Stage 2, but has reserved the right to do so if the following measures are not adequate in meeting the water needs of our citizens and local businesses.

OUTDOOR WATERING

If you have City water service, you or your landlord are required under this ordinance to adhere to the following:

  • Odd-numbered addresses water on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday for a maximum of 2 HOURS per day.
  • Even-numbered addresses water on Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday for a maximum of 2 HOURS per day.
  • Watering is PROHIBITED daily from 10 am to 6 pm and entirely on Mondays.
  • Washing of sidewalks, driveways, or parking lots with potable water is PROHIBITED.
  • Carwashes for fundraising are PROHIBITED.
  • Compliance with rules is expected while Stage 2 is in effect.

EXCEPTIONS:

  • Trucked effluent, harvested water, grey water, hand-held water containers, and plants in moveable containers.

  • Newly planted turf seed or sod receives a 60-day exemption to allow for establishment.

  • Nurseries and landscape companies watering manually.

  • City Parks: Monday, Wednesday, & Friday schedule.

INDOOR CONSERVATION

  • Leaks from private water lines must be repaired within 30 days of notice from our utility department.
  • Restaurants -- please serve water only upon request!

USE OUR WATER WISELY!

PENALTIES

We expect full cooperation with this effort, but in the event that there is non-compliance, the following action will be taken:

First Offence: Verbal warning from the City of Española .

Second Offense: Water shut off; to turn it back on, you must complete a form acknowledging the offenses.

Third Offense: Meter removal; to reinstall meter, a reconnection fee must be paid and a fine will be imposed.

REMEMBER THAT A COMMUNITY
